For years, Lufkin Rink has served as a source of pride, energy, and tradition for the Rumsey community. At the heart of Rumsey’s hockey program stands Stephen Spooner ’94, Rumsey’s steadfast Rink Manager. This December, the School honored his dedication by officially naming the Boys’ Varsity Hockey Locker Room in his honor.

Raised on Rumsey’s campus, Steve attended as a student, and was involved in a variety of athletics. His late father, Rick Spooner, taught at the School for more than four decades and left a legacy of his own. His family history created a strong foundation for him to return to campus years later and step into his role, combining his professional experience with his strong commitment to Rumsey.

Now in his tenth year overseeing Lufkin Rink, Steve manages many aspects of the hockey program. Whether it’s preparing the ice, scheduling ice time, fine tuning the locker room, or overall team support, his approach is driven by purpose.

He strives to create an environment that gives the same experience that one would get in the highest level of the sport, explaining that “giving an NHL type of experience” matters deeply to him.

“It’s important to me that they have the best experience possible, not only the players, but the coaches, the faculty, and the parents who come to watch.” –Stephen Spooner ’94

At the dedication ceremony, Head of School Brooke Giese spoke to the care behind that experience. “This rink is top notch because Steve Spooner puts his heart into every detail,” she said. “But what truly sets Steve Spooner apart is not just the rink, it’s the relationships.”

Students feel his impact daily. Boys Varsity Hockey players Lawrence B. ’26 and Finn W. ’27, spoke on Steve’s behalf during the ceremony. “Every single day he gives 110 percent to ensure we have the best locker room and program possible,” Lawrence shared. Finn added, “One of the best parts of my day is getting up to the rink and walking into the locker room.”

Carrie Guillory and Ken Wallach P’27, ’27, who envisioned and generously funded the dedication of the locker room, said that naming the space in Steve’s honor was an easy decision. “Steve epitomizes Rumsey’s core values – kindness, excellence in his work, and dedication to the community.”

For Steve, the dedication represents both pride in his work and the opportunity to carry forward a legacy of his own. When players see his name next to the locker room door, he hopes they remember the “ultimate hockey experience” and that he is their number one fan.
