Grades K–5 Curriculum

The Lower School English program guides students in discovering their voice as writers through a workshop approach that emphasizes process, genre exploration, and authentic expression. Supported by the 6+1 Traits of Writing framework, grammar and spelling instruction, and digital publishing tools, students learn to write, revise, and reflect with increasing independence. Speaking and listening are also central, as students build confidence in classroom discussions, collaborative work, and public presentations that strengthen communication skills across all areas of learning.

Reading is at the heart of the Lower School experience, with a structured, research-based approach that supports students as they grow from foundational decoding to fluent, expressive, and thoughtful reading. Beginning with the UFLI Foundations phonics program and progressing through small-group instruction, rich discussions, and diverse texts, students build skills in comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Through read-alouds, independent reading, and cross-curricular integration, Rumsey students develop a deep appreciation for reading as a source of discovery, connection, and lifelong learning.

Grounded in the Illustrative Math 360 curriculum, the math program guides students through a problem-based approach that emphasizes conceptual understanding, reasoning, and real-world application. Lessons are built around collaborative exploration, meaningful discourse, and reflective practice, helping students develop confidence, flexibility, and resilience as problem-solvers. Tools like DreamBox and NWEA MAP Growth assessments provide additional insight into student progress and help inform instruction, supporting each learner’s development within the structure of the curriculum.

The Social Studies program encourages students to explore history, culture, government, and global issues through inquiry, discussion, and hands-on learning. As they examine diverse communities, civic structures, and moments of resilience, students build the knowledge and empathy needed to understand the world and their place in it. With a focus on critical thinking and real-world connections, the curriculum empowers students to lead with curiosity, responsibility, and purpose.

The STEM program engages students in hands-on learning that blends scientific inquiry, engineering design, and foundational technology skills. Beginning in Pre-K with basic coding and building challenges and expanding through the IIIrd Form (grade 5) with robotics, circuitry, and real-world design projects, students learn to think critically, solve problems creatively, and collaborate effectively. With access to a fully equipped STEM lab and a curriculum that evolves with each grade, students develop the mindset and skills of adaptable, forward-thinking innovators.

The library is a dynamic hub for exploration and inquiry, where students read for both pleasure and learning. From early story experiences to research projects and multimedia presentations, students learn to navigate library systems, evaluate sources, and use information ethically and effectively. With opportunities for independent discovery and collaborative learning, the program fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong appreciation for reading and responsible research.

Music plays an essential role in the Lower School, inviting students to build skills in singing, rhythm, music literacy, and instrumental performance through a thoughtfully designed curriculum. From steady beat and movement in the early years to recorder, ukulele, and two-part harmonies in the upper grades, students grow as expressive musicians and confident performers. The program encourages creative expression and cultural appreciation, with opportunities to share their growth through community events such as the Winter Celebration of Song and Art, Grandfriends’ Day, and the Lower School Musical.

Performing Arts

Visual art is an integral part of the Lower School experience, where students explore creativity through a wide range of media, techniques, and cultural traditions. From playful color exploration in the early years to more sophisticated work in design, sculpture, and animation, each grade builds both artistic skill and essential habits like resilience, reflection, and collaboration. Students learn to value the creative process as much as the final product, contributing to real-world projects like musical set design while developing confidence, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for artistic expression across time and cultures.

The Spanish program introduces students to the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through immersive, age-appropriate experiences that grow with them from Pre-K through IIIrd Form. With a foundation in Sonrisas Spanish and progression to language labs and digital tools like Rosetta Stone, students build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Cultural celebrations, storytelling, and global citizenship projects encourage empathy, communication, and a meaningful connection to the wider world.

The PE and Health program encourages students to build lifelong habits of wellness through active movement, teamwork, and informed decision-making. Through a curriculum that blends motor skill development, fitness, and sport with essential health topics like nutrition, emotional well-being, and safety, students gain the tools to care for their bodies and minds. Community experiences such as the Winter Wellness Celebration and Track and Field Day reinforce perseverance, resilience, and the importance of supporting one another.
