Lower School Signature Experiences

Woven throughout the Lower School years, these experiences and programs strengthen character, elevate student voice, and bring learning to life in joyful, lasting ways.

Building Voice and Leadership

From their earliest years, Rumsey students learn that their voices matter, and that leadership means listening, speaking up, and taking action. Through opportunities like Morning Meeting, Student Council, mentoring younger peers, and bi-weekly leadership lessons, students practice communication, responsibility, and collaboration in meaningful ways. By Grade 5, they confidently take on visible roles in the school community, developing the empathy, purpose, and agency that define the Rumsey Lower School experience.

Character and Community

  • Blue Dog Character Words
Ten core values—honesty, kindness, respect, empathy, integrity, open-mindedness, perseverance, responsibility, resilience, and self-reflection—anchor daily life. Introduced through shared language, reinforced in classrooms and Morning Meetings, and modeled by both peers and adults, these traits help students grow into thoughtful, caring community members.
  • Celebrating Reading in Community
Reading is celebrated across the year through traditions that bring students together across grades. Events like the Summer Reading Kickoff, Snowstorm of Reading, and Rumsey Bookfest highlight the joy of books while strengthening connection, curiosity, and student voice.

Creativity and Expression

  • Lower School Musical Production
A highlight for Grade 3–5 students, the annual musical begins with winter song classes and builds toward a full-stage spring performance. Students build confidence and collaboration skills, with opportunities to shine on stage or contribute behind the scenes through:

Performing Arts

  • Playing with Words
Each spring, students write, revise, and share original pieces as part of Playing with Words, a cherished celebration of student authorship during National Poetry Month. Published in an anthology and read aloud in multi-age groups, each voice is celebrated.
  • Lower School Air Band Show
A community favorite, the Air Band Show invites students to perform choreographed, lip-synced routines in groups. From song selection to costumes, students lead the creative process—building confidence, teamwork, and joy.

Innovation and Discovery

  • STEM Innovation and Exploration
In Rumsey’s dedicated Lower School STEM lab, students explore coding, engineering, robotics, and design through hands-on projects. From early sequencing to LEGO Spike builds, students gain confidence as problem-solvers and collaborators.
  • Outdoor & Experiential Learning
Our 300-acre campus is a classroom in itself. Whether journaling by the pond, exploring seasonal changes in the woods, or reflecting in Treasure Island—our outdoor classroom—students develop curiosity, observation skills, and a strong connection to the natural world.

Celebratory Traditions

  • Winter Celebration of Song and Art
In December, families gather outdoors to enjoy seasonal vocal performances and a student-curated art show. With cocoa and cookies by the fire, this festive event reflects the warmth and creativity of Lower School life.
  • Wellness Celebration
Led by Grade 5 students and our physical education faculty, this high-energy February event transforms the gym into mixed-age stations focused on movement, mindfulness, and healthy habits—promoting well-being through fun and community.
  • Lower School Checkers Tournament
A winter tradition where students compete in a color team–based tournament that culminates in a Red vs. Blue final match. It’s a spirited celebration of focus, sportsmanship, and school pride.
