JOB TITLE: Head Counselor
DEPARTMENT: Summer Camp
REPORTS TO: Director – Summer Camp
COMPENSATION RANGE: $24/hour
FTE: Temporary, Full-time (Seasonal)
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Head Counselor plays a key leadership role in shaping a fun, safe, and engaging summer experience for our campers. This position supports both campers and staff while helping create a positive, inclusive camp community.
Responsibilities
The Head Counselor will:
- Lead the creation of fun, developmentally appropriate activities that foster exploration, adventure, and friendship.
- Ensure a safe and well-guided experience for all campers, including mentoring counselors and CITs.
- Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to motivate campers and staff, collaborate with Camp Directors, and interact professionally with families.
- Work closely with Camp Directors and fellow Head Counselors to coordinate the overall camp program—planning daily activities, leading programs, and exchanging feedback that contributes to a meaningful camp experience.
- Engage warmly and proactively with families during drop-off, pick-up, and family events.
- Participate in daily camp activities and meet the physical expectations of the role, including extended periods of standing, walking, and active movement in outdoor environments.
Schedule:
- Seasonal position running June 22 – July 31
- Camp operates Monday–Friday
- Head Counselor shifts are up to 8 hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
- A required orientation meeting will take place during the week before camp begins
Education:
- College degree or working toward a college degree preferred
Experience:
- Prior experience working with children ages 3–10 in a camp, recreational, or educational setting
License/Certification:
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred
