At Rumsey Hall, the youngest learners begin their academic journey in a nurturing environment designed to spark curiosity and build strong foundations. From Pre-K through IIIrd Form (Grade 5), students are immersed in a warm, responsive environment where skills are developed with care and character is woven into everyday experiences.
Our approach honors who children are now—and who they are becoming. With a balance of guidance and discovery, students grow at their own pace, supported by strong relationships and purposeful learning. By the end of Grade 5, they are not only prepared for the academic demands of middle school—they carry with them confidence, compassion, and a lasting sense of belonging.
Lower School

Effort is Intentionally Taught
Students learn that effort and achievement are not the same—and that how they approach learning matters. Through consistent routines, teacher modeling, and reflection, students develop perseverance, goal-setting habits, and a mindset that supports growth across all subjects.

Every Child is Known and Guided
We honor the whole child: academic, social, emotional, and creative. Teachers are more than instructors; they’re mentors who nurture growth and celebrate individuality. Whether asking bold questions, painting in the art studio, or leading a game on the playground, students are seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.
Academic Foundations with Structure
Our curriculum balances structure with creativity, combining research-based programs with teacher-designed instruction to meet students where they are. Foundational literacy begins early, while Illustrative Math 360 fosters deep conceptual mathematical understanding across all grades. Co-curricular classes in Spanish, STEM, music, visual arts, library, health, and physical education support whole-child development through movement, exploration, and expression.

Building Voice and Leadership
From their earliest years, students learn that their voices matter, and that leadership means listening, speaking up, and taking action. Through opportunities like Morning Meeting, Student Council, mentoring younger peers, and bi-weekly leadership lessons, students practice communication, responsibility, and collaboration in meaningful ways. By Grade 5, they confidently step into visible leadership roles in the school community with purpose and confidence.

Signature Experiences
Learning extends far beyond the classroom through signature experiences that cultivate creativity, character, and connection. Whether performing in the musical, building in the STEM lab, mentoring a younger peer, or celebrating their own writing, students gain essential skills and a strong sense of identity as learners, leaders, and community members.

Afternoon Enrichment Program (AEP)
From 3:00 to 4:15 p.m., students participate in a dynamic, mixed-age program led by faculty and local specialists. A rotating menu of artistic, athletics, and academic activities encourage exploration, creativity, and growth. Grade 5 students may also join Upper School athletic teams, deepening connections with older peers while building confidence beyond the classroom.
