WEEK 1 (JULY 2-JULY 6, no camp July 4) PIRATE BOOTY

Sail the ocean blue and explore lands far away in search of a hidden treasure. Campers will build cork pirate boats to race down the Bantam River and create wave bottles full of ocean treasures—perhaps even a shark or two! Campers will follow the Rumsey Treasure Map navigating their way throughout campus to discover hidden gems. Exploding treasure chests will reveal the pirate booty of the day. Campers will create their own pirate catapult and cannon ball toss that is sure to be a camp favorite! We will even “walk the diving board plank” to dive for pennies at Shepaug School’s swimming pool. Each camper will look the part with their eye patch, bandana and pirate hat. Pirates will sail off campus one day to Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT to ride the Pirate Ship and explore the many water adventures.

rumseysummer! Olympics will start with our traditional opening ceremony when each camper will carry a handmade torch to the campfire to begin the festivities. Coaches will assist in creating team flags, bracelets and mascots. This year we will have new Olympic events mixed in with some favorites from past years ranging from silly relay races to sporting events. Teams will create a myriad of Olympic crafts and witness Olympic fireworks in a glass during a special science activity. Older campers will travel off campus to compete in bowling and minigolf competitions. Please plan to attend Friday’s family lunch to view the closing medal ceremony to recognize and highlight each camper’s special and unique talents. We will honor the Greek tradition of wearing laurel wreaths as the Olympic flame is extinguished signifying the closing of the games.

3-2-1- Blast Off! Campers will travel to faraway galaxies this week, building different rockets and creating spacecrafts—water rockets guarantee to keep everyone cool on those hot summer days! Space travel would not be complete without cosmic dodge ball and a visit from outer space aliens who will leave moon rocks for campers to discover. We will spend one afternoon at the planetarium at The Children’s Museum in West Hartford, CT. Astronauts will also explore the laws of gravity at the Skyzone Trampoline Park in Bethel, CT.

Do you love exciting science experiments and wonder how and why things happen? Campers become Rumsey’s Mad Scientists this week and discover the amazing experiments that can be done with a few simple materials. Each day will be centered around a specific scientific theme. We will explore different types of reactions, the five senses, electricity and weather, just to name a few. Campers will take an excursion to the Hartford Science Museum, CT to further refine their scientific skills. This week promises to provide hands-on experiences that will be educational, fascinating and fun!

The Amazing Race travels to Rumsey! The camp ambassador welcomes the teams each morning to the country we are visiting for the day. There will be craft projects representing each country. Teams will participate in a variety of challenges that take them around the world, including trying to place jumping beans into a sombrero while in Mexico and using chopsticks to move rice from one bowl to another in China. Campers will encounter detours and roadblocks that require choosing between two tasks. Teams will bead an African necklace and create paper flowers from Hawaii. Campers will journey to The Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT to complete some of their challenges. By the end of the week we will determine the winner of Rumsey’s Amazing Race!
