Rumbling Robots at Rumsey: Students Dive into Computer Science with Coding Robots

If you've noticed some new robotic friends roaming the Rumsey campus, fear not, these machines are just part of a new STEAM project for Ist and IInd Form students.

Taking full advantage of the rambling space provided by our indoor tennis courts, Lower School students eagerly dove into the task of coding robots. Sphero, a STEAM-based program designed to encourage exploration and perseverance, provided the students with hands-on computer science lessons at their academic level. Using the power of imagination and play, students had fun programming the interactive robots—all the while learning computer science skills!

After mastering the basics of programming, the students conceptualized how they could turn their ideas into actual inventions. From here, they can go on to a robust future in computer science with this foundation in electronics, mathematical concepts, computation skills, and hands-on coding experience through play-based learning.
