Building an Archway to Ancient Rome: Experiential History Lesson

As part or our active and experiential learning program, the students in Mr. Kinsella's Global History and Geography class learned about the infrastructure of ancient Rome. Students crafted their own arch by studying the composition of the concrete used in ancient Rome and compared it to what we use today to build lasting structures. The class also studied the arch form as an architectural innovation that was used in ancient Rome, taking note of how an arch can be created through segments of equal parts. From there, the class mixed concrete, set it into a mold, waited for it to cure, and then created an on-campus structure for the rest of the student body to see.
