The basic philosophy of the athletic department at Rumsey Hall
is that interscholastic athletics exist as an essential phase of
the student's full education. As an educational process, athletics
serve these purposes:
- To teach students the rules, fundamentals, and skills of various
individual and team sports, to provide physical training and to
serve as an outlet.
- To provide a healthy competition between schools, cultivating
in each student the principles of sportsmanship and proper conduct.
- To develop attitudes and judgments of self which good athletic
competition provides and which will serve the student as he or
she goes forward in competition.
Each Rumsey student is required to participate in afternoon athletics,
Monday through Friday, and sometimes on weekends. Rumsey Hall provides
the equipment and uniforms for most sports and the school is stocked
with other essential athletic supplies such as socks, sweatsuits, etc.
Most activities use on-campus facilities. The ski program travels
to Mohawk Mountain each day; the hockey team skates on artificial
ice at the rinks of nearby Gunnery School and Taft School
as well as on Rumseyıs natural ice; the crew program uses the Washington
Club area on Lake Waramaug; and the riding program is held at Hoopdance
Hollow Farm.
Following is a brief description of the sports and activities offered
in each season.
