Rumsey Hall's Dicke Family Library is centrally located on
campus, adjacent to the study hall and computer lab, and within
easy access to all Upper and Lower School classrooms. The
library's goal is to help Rumsey students develop the skills
necessary to access and use information efficiently and effectively,
as well as encourage them to develop a love of books and lifelong
reading habits. Like most libraries, ours is a place for study,
research, and leisure reading, and students are encouraged
to be considerate of others who wish to work. Because many
teachers assign group projects, quiet discussion of homework
is permitted at the group worktables.
Each week, all Lower School students have regularly scheduled
library classes. They are taught basic library and research
skills and frequently use the library resources to complete
assignments. In addition to the formal classes, the librarian
reads to the students from a wide variety of literature. All
of our students are encouraged to check out books on a weekly
basis for leisure reading.
During the school day, the Upper School teachers may bring
their classes in to do research. They frequently work closely
with the librarian to tailor a class to the specific research
needs of their students. Rumsey students also use the library
during study hall, extra-help and evening study periods. They
frequently relax by browsing through the periodicals or looking
at the new books on display.
In addition, a number of older students serve as Prefects
and help with the many tasks required to keep the library
running smoothly. The Dicke Family Library displays student
projects and artwork on an ongoing basis.
Throughout the year, programs are offered to encourage leisure
reading. We participate in many nationwide reading programs
such as Teen Read Week, Children's Book Week, Read Across
America, National Library Week and Book It! During the extra-help
period at the end of the day we are able to schedule guest
speakers, theatre groups and book talks to enrich the academic
life of our students.
